Energy Saving
Tips

  • Keep the house closed tight during the day and don’t let in unwanted heat and humidity.
  • Use ceiling fans to increase comfort levels at higher thermostat settings.
  • Do no set back your thermostat for more than 5 degrees.
  • Mini-blinds can reduce solar heat gain by 40-50 percent.
  • Check your A/C air filter every month during cooling season. Normal dust build-up can reduce air flow and use more energy trying to cool down your home.
  • Turn up your A/C when you leave for more than an hour.
  • Let the night air in, during the summer months temperatures may drop during the night. Make the most of these refreshing hours by cracking the windows before you go to bed. Just be sure to close the windows (and the blinds) before things get too hot in the morning.

Air Conditioning

Installing the proper air conditioning system allows you to control the temperature and humidity. You will no longer need to be subjected to extreme hot summer temperatures and humidity, as you can now keep your home at the level you find most comfortable. Proper sizing and installation are key elements in determining air conditioner efficiency and comfort, as are proper unit location, insulation, and adequate duct installation.

Central Air Conditioners

Central air conditioners are more efficient and provide more over all comfort than room air conditioners, in addition of being out of the way, quiet and convenient to operate. To save energy and to have a lower cost of operation, you may consider installing a high efficiency air conditioner.

Ductless Heat Pumps

Ductless heat pumps (mini splits) make good retrofit add-ons to houses with "non-ducted" heating systems, such as hydronic (hot water heat), radiant panels, and space heaters (wood, kerosene, propane). They can also be a good choice for room additions where extending or installing distribution ductwork is not feasible, also very efficient new homes that require only a small space conditioning system. The main advantages of mini splits are their small size and flexibility for zoning or heating and cooling individual rooms. Mini splits have no ducts, so they avoid the energy losses associated with the ductwork of central forced air systems. Duct losses can account for more than 30% of energy consumption for space conditioning, especially if the ducts are in an unconditioned space such as an attic.
